One of the easiest ways to develop a platform today is through a blog. Starting a blog is fairly simple and free of charge when you’re hosted by the likes of WordPress.com, Blogger.com, and other CMS. That said, self-hosting allows you more freedom and control over your blog, and is considered as an ideal option for serious bloggers.
One of the reasons why you should start a self-hosted blog today is that it doesn’t require technical expertise. Using these four simple steps, you can start your self-hosted blog on WordPress in less than 30 minutes!
1: Gather Resources
For a self-hosted blog on WordPress, you need:
If you already have a registered domain, you can also use it to host your WordPress blog.
2: Setting Up Hosting Account
This step is where your dream blog will go ‘live’. There are various hosting services available to choose from, so we’ll work with Bluehost in this instance. Choosing a different hosting service won’t really affect how you set up your account. The reason why we’re choosing Bluehost is that it has good support features, and WordPress officially recommends Bluehost along with three other hosting service providers. On top of that, you get unlimited bandwidth, disk space, domains, and email accounts, so it’s a win-win.
Once you have chosen your hosting plan, choose the domain name and a desirable extension (.com, .net, .biz, etc.) and click Next. Provide your account information and choose a package that best suits your needs. We personally recommend the Plus Package. After choosing your plan, provide your billing information and agree to the Terms of Service so your credit card information can be verified.
Once you have successfully purchased a domain, you can now create a password, after which your Bluehost account will be created.
Once you’re done creating the account, log in using your details and go to the Control Panel, or cPanel as otherwise known.
3: Install WordPress
Visit the WordPress website and scroll to the Website section. Click on Install WordPress logo that appears and simply click the Install button afterwards. This will land you to another screen where you should choose the domain where you will install WordPress. Select the Advanced Options on the following screen and enter the site title, which you can always change later. Accept the suggested username and password by Bluehost and click on ‘I have read the terms and conditions of the GPLv2.’
4: Log into WordPress
Click the Admin URL link and you will be landed to the login page. Enter your admin username and password and you will be landed to WordPress Dashboard. This is where you can start posting content on your self-hosted blog!
